Hi everyone, just transitioned to the new membership Ver. 2.0 The Creative Pianist. The previous membership was pretty awesome, however the work that Ruth has put into re-organising, adding content ( a lot of candles burnt I'm sure) has taken it to a new level, a bit like moving up from a Holden Commodore to a Caprice SSV V8 Clubsport model, or maybe a Mustang to a Corvette??? I'm not really into cars, just trying to paint a picture of my feeling 😄

I've just gone through today (had a free day) and completed 'The Creative Pianist Hub' which is the starting program that lays out all the curriculum/structure. Personally, I really like the new membership version 2.0, I only joined previous membership in Sep 2021 as a beginner, but I'm happy to re-set back to the start and work through the lesson structure that Ruth has designed. I think that will be good, really embed the teachings.

I'm really glad I transitioned to the new membership, it's still great value, and I'm looking forward the journey ahead.

BTW, I first Ruth in the Musical-U program where she is the resident piano pro and I have really enjoyed her teaching there so it is easy to say, "Okay let's do more!' Thanks for all of this work and great content!

Ok Creative Pianists! So emails gone out but just to reiterate - the next training is on Memorising/memorizing! (one of those UK/US spelling differences).
I want to hear from you so that I make sure I'm addressing what we need to in this training at the end of July!

Do you ever struggle with remembering music? If so, what specifically do you find most difficult?
How are you at recognising sections as they are repeated in songs? Or how about, recognising motifs as they are repeated?
As you'll learn in the FB live this week - memory plays a role in playing by ear, because if we train it, we can cut down the processing time on working out a song by ear... let me know your struggles with musical memory and we'll get down to it at the end of July!

YES! it's always been something I've never been able to do in my past hobby guitar life. And at times caused embarrassment when friends and family have handed me a guitar and said 'go on Mike - play us something'!!!! After all the practice etc, I could not remember one song, so would just play a 3 chord progression and make up fun lyrics to suit the moment.

Why is that? The last year of my Musicality journey with MU and Piano Picnic has maybe given me some insights as to why I've not been able to remember songs to play:

in the past too focused on the sheet music/chords chart/TAB
didn't really understand what the 'Form' of the song was
-my practice wasn't focused on learning the song as such, my brain was probably still trying to process technique

The last few months have seen me remembering a couple of songs that I can play (sort of) without looking at the song sheet. So I think all my creative studies with Piano Picnic are maybe changing the way my brain is processing???

Conclusion: There must be a Framework / Process for learning a song, but I don't know what that is.

MikeClarke Mike! This is great to hear your experience: I think you are definitely experiencing the shift that happens as you learn more about music theory and start to find songs easier to learn/remember, this is exciting! There's definitely a framework for learning songs - I'll make sure I address that in the memory training, since we'll be doing exercises to help you commit to short-term and then long-term memory. The song learning process as well as how you practise songs ongoing is crucial. As always, love your feedback Mike!

⚠️ ❓️ YOUR FEEDBACK REQUESTED!!! - PIANISTS - I'm writing the next coaching for August right now, the topic is 'Playing with Others' - super cool topic, obviously!! (Aren't they all?)
But I want to hear from you - what type of groups/ensembles/duos are you most likely to play in? Or want to play in? Would you start a band? Or just want to play with a singer? Do you accompany a choir?

What other questions do you have about playing with others?

I have LOADS of experience playing in bands, accompanying singers/singing groups/playing in church... but not much experience playing with orchestral instruments, sadly.
What interests you the most about this topic????!!! 🤔

I think my Creative Piano journey might be more playing Solo, and singing, doing a bit of Busking for charities/communities.

However, that might present opportunities for accompanying another Singer, and I'm not sure how I would go about that, nerves would definitely kick-in trying to keep the correct measures/beat. Maybe I would give it a go, I don't know?

I don't think I'd be drawn to a Band scenario.

However, I will be interested to follow the coaching, because I know I'll learn from it whatever it covers. I'm like a Sponge at the moment soaking up all this good Piano Picnic tasty 'musical' food. :-)

MikeClarke yaaahhh! Love the enthusiasm! Yes, it's true - playing in a group isn't for everyone, it is certainly a different experience to playing solo. So many things to consider! But playing with just a singer, or another soloist has it's challenges too, so I'm sure we'll find something useful for you!
