RuthPower Finally! Got to the Voice leading lesson, and discovered that it's actually what I've been doing. One of the first things I do when i'm trying to learn a new song for piano is figure out the easiest way to get from 1 chord to the next; I had no idea it was called "‘Voice leading."

My piano progress reminds me of the phrase from Edgar Allen Poe, "...Slowly I turn...," but it is, at least forward progress.🙂

I'm so impressed with the others here that I have to keep reminding myself that I'm a vocalist just learning piano, not a pianist who is learning new techniques. Big difference. You women are awesome!

Ruth, so glad I signed on for yearly; it'll likely take me a year to get through "‘Riffing Pro." 🤪

@RuthPower Cool! TODAY I am going to start Bass Riffs, so I will check out the Random Riff Challenge. I feel I'm getting behind, I want to try to do different things with what i presented in an area before I move to the next. Plus I have my goals & Creative Pianist stuff I want to work on.

It gets us to check in more, but if there are a lot of comments coming in on a thread & we don't get to check in soon, we end up being behind.

@RuthPower So I just tried the 1st Riffing Challenge. Not the most common key or chord progression, so that was a challenge for me. I tried it first with Riff #4 & the Riff #9. After a few tries of those two together I got into a rhthym with it. Now on to the Bass Riffs! I'll go back & try that back -to-back concept again later with some different riffs/ keys/progressions.

Regarding the email notifications - I've had a look and I can't find any way to change those email settings from the admin side -sorry about that! We're running on a reasonably basic forum system here, until Piano Picnic grows huge and I can afford my own developer, it's a little on the basic side! 😅

alexx88 Hi Alexx, I'm just getting ready to do that unique chord progression. I'm going to try the voice led high pass followed by the root position sus 2 couples. Then in a couple of days, I'll try a different combo. Hope you're having fun!!!

@RuthPower No worries with me about the email situation. It's good that people are aware of it though, in case they miss that sentence when it pops up. Otherwise unless a login in is made to check all new posts, no more emails will come through, & then it'll look like nothing is going on in the forum.

Just started looking at the challenge chord progression as well as the melodic riff modules. Sus 2 couples sound really cool! Actually, all of them are really cool. I think I'll do the challenge using some root positions and some voice leading. Time to quit talking and to start practicing. Have fun every one.!!!

Are there ways to tinker with sus 4 to do it in different inversions. I haven't sat down to experiment, maybe I should try stuff before asking. What about sus 2 couples, is there a way to tinker with that idea to do in different inversions.

vkisamore I’m curious to Ruth’s answer on this, too. I’m in the process of really trying to add sus 2/4's in. I mainly only do I them in root position because my fingers are right there & I don’t have to think about anything other than what I can play in what key. I haven’t really played around to see if inversions lead to the same tension - release effect, or if it will just sound like passing notes.

Are you you referring to the 1st Riff Challenge chord progression & then adding some melodic tones to it? It sounds like something cool I’d like to try too. Is this something new in the Melodic Riff section? Thanks!

hey lovely pianists! Great question @vkisamore & @alexx88 - I had to jump on the piano for that one! So especially for the sus2 couples - when you're playing through the inversions, the riff will still work as long as you put the 'sus' between the interval of a 3rd.

So in root position we have two intervals of a 3rd - so it will work for the 2 and the 4.
In 1st inversion we have an interval of a 3rd then a 4th - so this riff needs to be based around that 3rd interval (so a sus2 which is actually a sus4 of the root position chord)
then the 2nd inversion is intervals of a 4th and a 3rd - so that top interval of a 3rd is where the riff will happen using the ring finger (which is actually the root position sus2).

I will try to do a video of this and put it in the course- because this is a really good question!!!

Also - try doing a 2nd inversion for the sus2couples riff, using that ring finger to play the sus4 (actually sus2) note! IT'S SUPER HARD on the fingers! So there's your challenge for today - try to get that feeling fluent & fabulous!

I went through the Melodic Riffs Module today, Really, really cool! My favorites are #2 (sus2 Root Position), & #6 ( sus2 Couples ). My next favorite is #4 (Anticipate).

#3(sus4 Root) didn’t naturally fall off the tips of my fingers. That one took some thought & concentration. 🤪

I'm going to go through these again & try different keys & try some different progressions, & also see what my LH feels like doing.

@RuthPower Challenge Accepted!! First time through I used Bass Riff #7 with a 1 6 4 5 in the Key of D.

Chord positions were picked 100% on proximity, so D was in 2nd inversion, Bm in root, G in 2nd inversion, & A in root. Next time I’ll pick another key and/or progression, & see what chord positions work best.

Looking forward to seeing what everyone else tried. More riffs for the tool box! 😃

alexx88 Hey Alex!!! That sounds great - you are really winning the application of this course!! Regarding your chord positions - that third chord in the progression, G would be closer with a 1st inversion, yes? 😜

@RuthPower YES!!! And that was the inversion I used! B/D/G. I just went & re-did it.

That was a typo. That's what I get for posting things at 1 am. 🤪 Wish I could edit it.
